Yesterday was the last chess column of GM Robert Byrne in the New York Times. He is retired after 34 years! GM Byrne was one of the strongest American born Grandmasters and he had an illustrious career.
He was a former 2600 FIDE rated player (when 2600 meant the elite). He represented the United States and competed in the Candidate’s Match as well as the Olympiad. He was also the US Champion.
I would like to thank him for his contribution to chess and salute him for all his magnificent achievements. Please feel free to add your comments, stories or wonderful memories about GM Robert Byrne.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
GM Byrne is great! You should continue his column!
Hey Susan,
Who would be better than you to continue a weekly chess column in the biggest media market in the USA if not the world?
We should all write to the NY Times and tell them to have Susan write.
executive-editor@nytimes.com
managing-editor@nytimes.com
whitney@nytimes.com
These are the email I find that we can write to.
Great Idea. thanks for the emails. I will do it now.
Susan
they now have you running all chess in usa. uscf, all the tournaments, writing another chess column etc.
I think you will need a second body so you can be in 2 different places doing 4 different things at the same time.
all your chess fans just can not get enough of you.
Susan is the most logical choice to take over this column. No one else can attract the mass readership.
64 Hurrays for Mr. Byrne

One night when I got really drunk he stole $45 from my wallet!
I did not like his column. He was living in his own chess world, which was not my world.
Thank you for posting this page Susan. I tried to send a thank-you e-mail to Mr. Byrne at the NY Times but his e-mail is not listed. I looked forward to playing thru his Sunday morning chess column which was almost always filled with some historical tidbit that I never knew. I hope he realizes how much his column will be missed.
We’ll miss his column. He’s a great, as was his older brother, the late and remembered Donald. The Byrne’s, with Lombardy, Evans, Fischer, Bisguier, Mednis, Turner, Weinstein, Bernstein, Sherwin, Benko, Seidman…represent a truly golden era of american chess.
Susan, see my comments sent earlier. Thanks for a welcome tribute to Robert Byrne friend of 67 years. Al Porte
