Yesterday was the last chess column of GM Robert Byrne in the New York Times. He is retired after 34 years! GM Byrne was one of the strongest American born Grandmasters and he had an illustrious career.

He was a former 2600 FIDE rated player (when 2600 meant the elite). He represented the United States and competed in the Candidate’s Match as well as the Olympiad. He was also the US Champion.

I would like to thank him for his contribution to chess and salute him for all his magnificent achievements. Please feel free to add your comments, stories or wonderful memories about GM Robert Byrne.
