`Checkmate!’ echoes in Shamrock Gardens

Students at Shamrock Gardens Elementary are learning valuable skills through chess.

“It helps me think,” said fourth-grader Simone Lawrence. “If you make a wrong move, you can’t take it back. It’s like other subjects.”

The chess team, which started in September, has first- through fifth-graders from the learning immersion and talent development programs. Each Tuesday morning, 20 students gather in the media center to learn the rules, scoring and winning strategies.

“They are working on their character development and sportsmanship,” said Beverly Griffin, talent development teacher.
