I think I remember this:
Rd1+ Rd5
Qf4+ Kc6
Qxa4+ “etc.”
1. Rd1+ Rd5 2. Qf4+. Now, wherever BK moves, W will check and skewer the BQ/BR, winning at least a Rook.
2…Kc6 3. Qxa4+ Kc7 (3…Kd6 4. Rxd5+) 4. Qa7+ followed by 5. Qa8+, winning Rd5.
2…Ke7 3. Qf7+ picks the Rd5.
2…Ke6 3. Re1+ Re5 4. Qxe5#
Simple one, just giving the right checks.
1. Rd1+ forces Rd5 2. Qf4+
If 2. -, Kc6 3. Qxa4 followed by simplification 4. Qxd7 and exchange of all the material (3. -, Kc7 4. Qxd7+, Rxd7 5. Rxd7+, Kxd7) to get an easily won pawn endgame.
If 2. -, Ke6 3. Re1+ 1:0
So a bit better then Ke6 is 2. -, Ke7 but 3. Re1+, Kd8 4. Qf8+!, Kc7 5. Re7 1:0
Even I would have won this position against Vassily. Of course just if I have not overseen anything here. 🙂
Best wishes from Germany
Jochen (who would never have reached such a position against a player like Ivanchuk but that is not the point here :))
Doesn’t Rd1+ win the Queen for a Rook?
sergey — What about 1. … Rd5?

Rd1ch seems like the best move. Am I missing something?
Scratch my earlier post – Qf4! first, to negate the black rook block. THEN Rd1ch.
Rd1+ Rd5
Qf4+ Kc6
Rxd5 Qxd5
Qf7
this still seems to release that g pawn.
Rd1+ Rd5
Qf4+ Ke6
Qf7+ Qxf7
gxf7 Kxf7
Rxd5
here your up a rook.
Sergey, it’s more than just Rd1+
1. Rd1+, Rd5
2. Qf4+, Kc6
2… Ke6 loses to 3. Qe4+
3. Qe4
the pin is deadly, and there is no easy way to get out of it. Now, the white king can come up to c4, and kaput.
I agree.
Qa7 followed by Qa8+ (in the Kc6 line) or Qf7+ next to R/Qxd5 (in the Ke7 line) are “a little” smarter.
I handled after the golden rules Susan posted some time ago: If you are ahead in material exchange some, so I did in the Kc6 line… 🙂
Black should take his bottle of Vodka amf run!
See here Magnus chasing Chucky all over the board!
wolverine, if 2…Ke6, simply 3.Re1+ is instant death. In your line, 3.Qf7+??, Qxf7; 4.gxf7, Rxd1+ rather embarassingly wins for black

Rd1+ Rd5
Qf4+ Ke6
Re1+
this is better..
