Dresden Olympiad veteran GM Buenaventura Villamayor ended a string of heartbreaking finishes by ruling the Philippine Sports Commission’s All in Sports Expo 2010 chess tournament held over the weekend at the PSC canteen.

Villamayor outduelled upset-conscious David Elorta in 51 moves of the Slav to finish with a nine-round total of eight points in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported by the PSC.

Villamayor finished in a two-way tie for first place with GM Mark Paragua, who beat World Cup veteran GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr.

But Villamayor, a member of the Philippine team during the 2008 World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany, edged Paragua in the tiebreak.

However, Villamayor and Paragua will split the P50,000 for the top two placers.
