The Scholastic Council requests that the following motion be read into the Executive Board minutes as soon as possible.
“The Scholastic Council unanimously concurs with the Executive Board censure motion of Sam Sloan based on his Tuesday, March 6, 2007 posting on the USCF Forum.”
In addition, we plan to disseminate our motion with the text of the EB’s motion to the State Scholastic Coordinators shortly.
Thank you,
Mike Nietman
USCF Scholastic Council Chair

Based on the outrageous and unconscionable post to the USCF Forum by Sam Sloan on Tuesday March 6, 2007, in which he ridiculed an organization which has for many years been an important USCF sponsor, and which post contained a link to a pornographic website, the Board of Directors of the United States Chess Federation hereby declares that we find that Mr. Sloan’s action is unthinkable and inexcusable for a director of this organization and we hereby declare vehemently that we find his action deplorable and we censure Mr. Sloan and we publicly disavow disassociate ourselves individually, and this organization collectively, of from any of his actions in this matter.

ok, good start.
but how about show leadership by kicking him off the board?
Does anyone know if this will get any print in Chess Life?
I am sure Mr. Sam Sloan will now be repentant over this. Good job!
Censure means nothing. Sloan should be removed as USCF member.
From a long way away it seems very much like most members of the uscf board are coming to the opinion that the only way to save their positions is to cut the most controversial member adrift.
Not saying it is well deserved, just the timing is suspicious, right before elections.
Is this some sort of witch hunt??
I sense lots of hate here for Mr. Sloan. Not that I care what anyone feels about him… but is such hate necessary?
He posted a link to a pornography site where children can access it. He should have been thrown out of the USCF.
The notion that people “hate” Mr. Sloan simply because they find his actions deplorable is utterly ridiculous. I don’t personally know Mr. Sloan (I have read about him, he presents some interesting reading), I neither “like” nor “dislike” him. But anyone on the USCF board who posts a message on the USCF forum with links to a phonographic site should face more than a mere slap on the wrist. At the very least, Mr. Sloan should be kicked off the board. Does anyone know if there are rules for USCF governance which would allow for this?
….and?
What actions are taken now? None!
Is there a link to where on the USCF website this was announced?
The action is entirely correct but the drafting of this announcement is very poor.
Aren’t these things checked by the USCF before they’re issued?
Looks like they disavow all usage of punctuation too.

The reason the other E.B. members censured Sloan was to protect their own reputations.
Perfectly reasonable; not devoid of meaning.
As for kicking Sloan of the E.B., please remember the USCF is governed by Illinois and federal laws that it does not control.
Remember that legals fees are huge even when you win.
It is not up to he other E.B. members to kick Sloan off the board. It is up to the voting USCF members to vote more responsibly.
It is however the job of the E.B. to set minimum requirements for being eligible to vote (a job neglected). Otherwise every newcomer casts an uninformed vote, to have a big effect on an organization most will never renew their membership to: bad design.
