Ahmed Adly was one of the early leaders at the World Championship. But after a couple losses, he fell out of 1st place. But a strong finish gave him the prestigious World Junior Championship title, 1/2 point ahead of Ivan Popov of Russia. Pre-tournament favorites such as Wang Hao, Stellwagen and Laznicka all under performed.

Philippine sensation Wesley So led the tournament after about five rounds but then collapsed losing three of his next four games. He did get a GM norm (his second) though.
hao wang did not underperform…he simply did not win. Others overperformed, which is always nice to see.
Negi will win next year.
