1. Bf8+ 2. Ba3 3. a8=Q unless 2. … Ra1 then 3. Ka4 then 4. a8=Q Otherwise I don’t know…
Cheers, mlw
To anon 7:19 post..
Bf8 Kc7 Ba3 b6! Ka6 Ra1
Not so easy. Still working on it.
1. Bf8+ 2. Ba3 3. a8=Q unless 2. … Ra1 then 3. Ka4 then 4. a8=Q
1.Bf8+ Kc7 2.Ba3 Ra1 3.Ka4? b5+ and Black is in the driver’s seat.
Bf8 Kc7 Ba3 b6! Ka6 Ra1
1.Bf8+ Kc7 2.Ba3 b6+ 3.Ka4 and White cruises (3…b5+ 4.Kb3 Rb1+ 5.Kc2).
1.Bf8+ Kc7 2.Ba3 Ra1
[2…b6+ 3.Ka4 b5+ 4.Kb3 Rb1+ 5.Kc2 Kb7+-]
3.Kb4
[3.Ka4? b5+–+]
3…Rb1+ 4.Bb2!
[4.Kc4? b5+ Black is fine.;
4.Ka4 b5+–+]
4…Rxb2+ 5.Ka3 Rb1 6.Ka2 Rb6 7.a8N+! Kd6 8.Nxb6+-
Pharaoh
4.Kc4? b5+ Black is fine.;
“[F]ine,” indeed — doesn’t Black win from there?
Refute-1.Bf8+ Kc7 2.Ba3 Ra1
[2…b6+ 3.Ka4 b5+ 4.Kb3 Rb1+ 5.Kc2 Kb7+-]
3.Kb4
[3.Ka4? b5+–+]
3…Rb1+ 4.Bb2!
[4.Kc4? b5+ Black is fine.;
4.Ka4 b5+–+]
What if 3.Ba3,b6+ 4.Kb4,Rb1+ 5.Kc5[0r Ka5],Kb7 -+.
so the solution is:
1.Bf8+ Kc7
2.Ba3
Now black has 2 possibilities
b6 and Ra1
2. .. b6+
3.Ka4 (threatening a8=Q and Bc1)
3. .. b5+
4.Kb3 Rb1+
5.Ka2 Kb7
6.Kb1 1-0
so now:
1.Bf8+ Kc7
2.Ba3 Ra1
3.Kb4 Rb1+(only move to prevent a8)
4.Bb2 Rb2+
5.Ka3 Rb1
6.Ka2 Rb6!
(With the idea:
7.a8=Q Ra6+) but now there is:
7.a8=N+ Kd6
8.Nb6 1-0
