D’Souza claims seniors crown

ROSHAN D’Souza took the seniors title in the Telugu Kala Samithi (TKS) Open Chess Championship after finishing level on points with three others after the seventh and final round of play.

The champion was decided using the tie-break rule after D’Souza, Ali Abbas, Rajeev Ramachandran, and Renalto Costales finished with 5.5 points each.

D’Souza, who is from India, was paired up with Abbas of Bahrain in their concluding match. The pair settled for a draw, giving them 5.5 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Ramachandran, also from India, and Renalto Costales, from the Philippines, managed to win their games in the last round to join D’Souza and Abbas at the top of the table.

The tie-break rules put D’Souza ahead of the rest. Abbas finished second, Costales third and Ramachandran fourth.

Meanwhile, Hussain Bukhalaf took the juniors title after finishing with a perfect score of seven points from seven matches.
