Fifth Annual Scholastic Chess Club Chess Tournament

Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m., Frostburg Community Library

FROSTBURG – The Frostburg Community Library will host the Fifth Annual Scholastic Chess Club Chess Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m.

Organized by Frostburg resident Paul Yearling, the hour-long tournament culminates two months of weekly play Saturday mornings at the library. However, players do not have to have been participating in the weekly matches to join the tournament.

The cost of the tournament is $3, to offset expenses for awards and chess boards. Players can sign up by calling Yearling at 301-689-3618, or by registering the day of the tournament. Regular play will also occur this coming Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10:30 – 11:30, and participants can sign up at that time as well.

All children in elementary and middle school are welcome to play. Boards will be provided for the tournament, but players are asked to bring their own boards if they have them.

Yearling first organized the chess tournament when his daughter attended Frost Elementary School. She has since moved on to Mount Savage Middle, although a son remains at Frost. “I play chess, and I just wanted to get my kids involved in the game,” he said.
