Ne6+ and Qe7 or Qd8 coming
Nxh7+
nxf7 looks pretty strong
1. Ne6+! mates in at most 4 moves.
1. Nxh7? is worse as it gives the black king space to escape after Kg8.
At the first glance 1. Nxf7?! looks really strong but being down a rook and a bishop white won’t get enough for a won position if black decides to give back material. I am not sure if this is the best black move (and there may even by an easier way but not Qxd5 as I tried first) but 1. Nxf7?!, Qf2+! 2. Rxf2, Bxf2 3. Qxf2, Nhxf7 leaves black with two rooks for the queen (if I have not miscounted the material).
So I predict Ne6+ to be the only way to a (clear) win.
Thursday morning chess tactic
1. Ne6+ Nxe6 (1… Bxe6 2. Qe7+ Kg8 3. Qe8#) (1… Kg8 2. Qxd8#) (1… Ke8 2.
Qe7#) 2. Qe7+ Kg8 3. Qe8+ Nf8 4. Ne7#
After Ne6 there is an easy way to win, but I think that Nf7 is also good. Jochen, you missed mate in one – 1. Nxf7?!, Qf2+! 2. Rxf2, Bxf2 and white can play 3. Qd8 1-0.
Qd8 is not mate as Kxf7 is possible (isn’t it?) but you’re right:
Qd8 instead of Qf2 gives enough material to win.
Perhaps there’s something stronger than Qf2+?
After
1.Nxf7 Qf2+
2.Rxf2 Bxf2
there is a mate:
3.Qxd8+ Kxf7
4.Nf4+ d5
5.Bxd5+ Be6
6.Bxe6 #
So Nxf7 is also a solution? I think so.
