MANILA, Philippines – Grandmasters (GMs) Eugene Torre and Jayson Gonzales flashed their deadly old form in a rare simultaneous chess exhibition held in Quezon City on Sunday.

Torre tallied 15 wins and 1 draw in 16 board matches in the Mike Defensor Chess Challenge at the Barangay Kaunlaran covered court in Cubao.

Gonzales, meantime, scored 9 wins and 1 draw in 10 board matches.

Torre settled a draw with Isagani Barro, top player of BAPTODA Tricycle Drivers Association, while Gonzales split the point with Jun Calata from N. Domingo Street. Former Sen. Francisco “Kit” Tatad ushered the opening rites and addressed the participants.

Tatad and Torre paired off for the ceremonial moves together with Gonzales and 9-year-old Vincent Frank Nasiad of Marist School of Marikina, the event’s youngest participant.

GMs Torre and Gonzales also made known their support for Tatad, who is running for a senatorial post on May 10. The former senator said he will help the sports sector if elected again to the Senate.

The one-day chess exhibition event was organized by Ching Latonero, hosted by Barangay Kaulanran chairwoman Maria Tessa Atentar, backed by Quezon City councilor Suzette Bernardo and Quezon City mayoralty candidate Mike Defensor.
