Onishuck should have been 1st board: Onischuk has not lost a game! Bacrot has been playing awesome. Bacrot is a really tricky player: lots of cheapos. Kramnik!
That’s all very nice info, but – when does the last round start?
Armenia – Hungary was four quick draws. Is this allowed? As it was obviously pre-arranged yesterday, thus making it a fixed result. I’d like to see arbiters punish both teams with a 0-0 result in such cases.
Both teams were happy with this result. Armenia wins the Olympiad, and Hungary avoids a last round loss against the geniuses from Armenia.
Will soccer teams use the same strategy in Germany World Team 2006 next week? I don’t think so, they’d get a big BOOOOOOO.
Same fixed result in the Woemn’s Olympiad. Booooooooooooooooooo to the chess players.
I can hardly blame them for taking short draws and guaranteeing gold medals.
“I can hardly blame them for taking short draws and guaranteeing gold medals.”
I understand that, but I don’t support it at all. It promotes pre-arranging game results, more than anything else.
Why isn’t this an option in other major sports that have draw results as an option?
You CAN’T compare chess to soccer. Chess fans follow numerous games at once on the computer monitors at home or at work. There is no expense involved, nor travel time, nor the social component of cheering for a team along with other fans who are at the same place at the same time. It’s totally unrealistic to demand epic fights so that passively watching fans are better entertained.
Often there is talk that chess needs to model itself on other sports, like tennis. But tennis, like soccer, involves a visual and a social component, not to mention the fact that there is much more money involved. Chess is different. The most involvement it gets out of fans is participating in a few chats at a time. It’s hypocritical to demand players to be committed to the entertainment of the bloggers and chatters, who don’t spend a dime on watching, but whine all the time. There is constant talk of attracting sponsors, but it’s never mentioned that other sports are also financially supported by fans. Until chess fans start forking out large sums on chess, players are not obligated to provide entertainment.
USA wins a medal, don’t know which one yet!!!!!!! All the results fitted us perfectly!!!!!!!!!! Along with the weak Norway team lucky last round pairinig!!!!!!
Go USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You raised a few very good points. I’ll give it some thought, before I maybe comment back.
Nevertheless, pre-arranged game results (not made during the game) are pretty close to cheating.
Go USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Susan,
With todays results, USA has got the bronze medal in the men’s competition!!!!
