Putting knowledge to good use

Bob Mills teaches local students the finer points of chess

FORT PIERRE – Chess isn’t just a game. It is a vehicle for learning.

“Chess is one of the most powerful educational tools available to strengthen a child’s mind,” wrote Dr. Peter Dauvergne, author, professor and chess master.

Bob Mills of Fort Pierre shares Dauvergne’s views on chess and wanted to see this knowledge put to use. Mills wanted to put local students and the game of chess together.

“Chess teaches you how to think – how to think before you make a move,” Mills said.

Yet he wasn’t quite sure how to start. So Mills went to a place where he knew there were lots of families – his church. He asked the congregation if anyone’s children would be interested in being part of a chess group.

With those who responded, Pierre’s Countryside Home School Scholastic Chess Team was born.
