1.Rxg8+! Kxg8(If Qxg8 2.Qf6+ Qg7 3.Ra8+ Rc8 4.Rc8#) 2.f6! ..wins
1. Rxf7! and no matter how will black move, they’ll be checkmated or lose significant material.
1.Rg8+ Kg8 [1…Qg8 2.Qf6+ Qg7 3.Ra8+ Rc8 4.Rc8#] 2.f6 Qf8 3.Ra8 Rc8 [3…Qa8 4.Qg7#] 4.Rc8 Qc8 or Kg8 5.Qg7#
after 2.f6 Qf8, not 3.Ra8 because Q take with check, but 3. Qxf8+ Kxf8 4. Ra8+ and mate next move
yevlev,
After 1. Rxf7??
then
1. … RxR+!
2. KxR Qg8+
and it’s a whole new ballgame
i.e., if White blocks with Rook or Queen he loses the Rook, or if White moves the King, Black checkmates White:
3. Rg7 QxR+
4. QxQ+ KxQ
-or-
3. Qg7+ QxQ+
4. RxQ KxR
-or-
3. Kh1 Qg2++
-or-
3. Kf1 Qg2+
4. Ke1 Qe2++
chesstraveler,
In your analysis you missed:
1. Rg8+ Kg8
2. f6 Qf8
3. Ra8 Qa8+
(check on the long diagonal)
4. Kg1 Qg2++
1.Rxg8 Kxg8
2.f6 Qf8
3.Qxf8 Kxf8
4.Ra8+ Rc8
5.Rxc8 #
1.Rxf7?? Qa8+
2.Rg2 Qxg2#
sincerly, Vohaul

OK I will take black and move Qa8 check and mate coming up.
Rxf7 Qa8+
Rg2 Qxg2 mate
there is also another way for black to win:
Rxf7 Rxg1+
Kxg1 Qb6+
Kh1 Qc6+
Kg1 Qg2 mate
Susan this is a great puzzle. if not played correctly the other side wins.
This puzzle teaches the power of the check over trying to get setup to win on the next move. that is too slow.

yes well Bobby Fischer says if you are playing him then 1 P-K4 and he wins.
what I am trying to say is that you need to show the win.
yevlev immediately after you claims 1. Rxf7! wins and we see that it really loses. he too did not show the impossible win.
Chesstraveler showed his win and he missed a move and got mated also.
Please everyone try to show the win when possible.
I say NO CREDIT FOR A CORRECT ANSWER WITHOUT SHOWING THE WIN.
so far no one has the correct answer worked out where black gives the best defense. for best defence by black we have.
1 Rxg8+ Kxg8
2. f6 Rc1+
now white has to escape the checks.
If Qxc1 then Qxf6 stops the mate. so white must play Kg2 and black plays Rc2+
so we have made progress. we have to mate from
1. Rxg8+ Kxg8
2. f6 Rc1+
3. Kg2 Rc2+
Hi Susan
1. Rxg8, Kxg8[ if 1. …, Qxg8 2. Qf6, Qg7 3. Ra8, Rc8 4. Rxc8# Mate]
2. f6, Rc1
3. Kg2, Rc2
4. Kg3, Rc3
5. Kf4, Rc4[ if 5. …, Qxf6 6. Qxf6, Rc8 7. Qxf7, Kh8 9. Qh7# Mate]
6. bxc4, Qxf6
7. Qxf6, h6
8. Qxh6, f6
9. Qg7# Mate
Good day
he he he … nice @anonymous
1. Rxg8 Kxg8
(Qxg8 loses by mate .. as shown previously)
2.f6 Rc1+ an other interesting move BUT now my friends … simply
3.Qxc1 …
and white is winning “along the easy brute force” material way – without any thinking anymore …
dear godness …
sincerly Vohaul
I just saw that I missed the check on long diagonal and was rightfully punished. Ouch, reminds me of a few (hopfully just that) of my OTB rated games?

I thought I explained this with
“If Qxc1 then Qxf6 stops the mate. so white must play Kg2 and black plays Rc2+”
It is usual in a problem where mate exists to find the mate. Also I would like to add that the idea that someone can “without any thinking anymore….” still win the game, has led to many losses. The game is not WON until it is WON. When you have your opponent in a Mating Net, it is proper to keep him in the mating net and mate him.
I had someone in a mating net and let him out and I lost the game. I will never forget that lesson. It was an important tournament game.
Susan, just out of curiosity, can you tell us the opponent and the date of the game? With all this analysis, I’d like to look it up and see what was actually played.
Its great that there are so many good tacticians….My first thought was RA8
lol 1.Rxg8+ Kxg8 2.f6 Qf8 3.Qxf8+
Kxf8 4.Ra8+ Rc8 5.Rxc8 #
