1. Qc7
threatens both
2. RxR+
and
2. QxQ
1. Rxe8+ Qxe8
2. Qc7 (threatens mate) Qg8
3. Qxb7 wins a bishop
1. Rxe8+ QXe8
2. Qc7 (threatens mate)Qg8
3. QXb7 wins a bishop
While winning the bishop is fine and dandy…black has counterattack chances and can make life miserable for white with the protected passed pawn.
The more accurate solution is Qc7. The black queen is overworked.
just watched an interesting movie about chess: satyajit ray’s “the chess players”, in which the origins of chess are proposed. ray suggests that it began in india, not persia, and the spread to europe. EXCEPT the british innovations were: pawns can move 1 OR 2 spaces from the 2nd rank, upon reaching the 8th rank pawns promote, AND queens oppose each other. in this day and age it’s difficult to imagine the game as it may have been originally played…
Hi,
Qc7 and win for white.
I thought these innovations were in place by 1400’s long before the British could have influenced the rules.
this is neat!
Dear Susan
I Would play 1 Qc7 that i have seen few seconds.I hope is correct
Many kisses to all of yours!
Antonio
Having already known it’s a tactical puzzle, most ppl will find Qc7 within seconds, but how many amateurs can spot such moves in over the board play?
Only 1. Qc7 works. After 1. Rxe8+?? Qxe8 2. Qc7 e4! Black wins.

I spotted Qc7 in two or three minutes before looking at others comments. I’m not exactly a strong player and like kaerbofu says, I really wonder whether I would have found it in a real game. Knowing that there is a tactic to be found motivates one to keep searching on searching. Thus the oft-told advice, when you find a good move, keep searching for a better move.
I found it only because there was nothing else, no good capture nor check, just a pin (Re7) and a weak defender (the Black Queen).
BTW, who played this ?
