The Mikhail Tal Memorial in Mosow starts today until November 16. The classical chess event is a category 20 round robin with 10 players: Carlsen, Shirov, Grischuk, Ponomariov, Aronian, Leko, Gelfand, Mamedyarov, Svidler and Morozevich.
Who is your pick to win this strong category 20 event?
There will be also a blitz tournament on November 18 and 19 with some big names such as Anand, Karpov, Judit and Kasimdzhanov, etc.
Here is the website.

Are the games live anywhere online with a pgn viewer?
Thanks!
I cannot pick a winner. It’s such a strong list full of GMs who, when they are “on” have shown themselves unstoppable. It should be exciting! We’ve certainly be blessed with a plethora of fun chess events lately (and better coverage than we’ve ever had)
who knows? I’ve gone through 3 copies of The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal. The latest one which I have now has broken into 3 pieces and I handle them with the utmost care.
We should thank God for giving us such a blessedly beautifull player. So what if he was not always (Correct)> His life was beautifull to watch.
“Some sacrifices are sound; the rest are mine.” Mikhail Tal
That takes heart to play moves like that. I know what you mean about having books that fall apart from so much use, I have a few like that myself 😉
Its very interesting to note that the greatest attackers in history are usually held closest to people’s hearts, not the greatest defenders.
that’s a tough question really. probably either Svidler or Leko but not too sure cuz Aronian has already shown that he can win such big tournaments (Linares…). But also Shirov might be a candidate if he’s in a really good shape… however, probably not Moro cuz he usually doesn’t play that well against the “big guys” (apart from San Luis, for sure). hence it will be interesting to see how Carlsen plays against all the super GMs!
Anyways, I’m looking forward to see great chess !
Svidler and Moro will be my favourites. I wouldn’t be too disappointed if Carlsen is not scoring too many points. It would surely be nice but I don’t think he is positionally mature enough for that. Eventually he will be after getting more experience.
Svidler for sure.
Tal in his prime would crush those patzers on their best day.
“If Tal offers a sacrifice, Accept
If Karpov or Petrosian offers a sacrifice, Decline
If Kasparov offers a sacrifice, Resign”
Games start tomorrow morning (US time) and apparently will be broadcast live at ICC. You can see the schedule at: http://www.chessclub.com/
Who’ll win it? I’m going with Mamedyarov or Svidler as my picks (but Carlsen as my favorite).
My heart says Carlsen ,
my mind says Morozevich ,
my intuition says Mamedyarov ,
my nightmare says Leko ,
so I guess it will be one of those I did not mention…

Just a question here – how does a Category number, like 20 in this case, gets determined? I’d guess it uses the ratings of players, but simple averaging will get around 2700, which has no obvious connection to a number 20.
where can i see the games live

Btw
the first 22 moves of
Shirov-Mamedyarov equalled Judits
last game against Mamedyarov at Essent. The open Ruy with the piece sack. Now on move 23 Shirov played
23.Nh6 instead of Judits 23.Nf6
and the game ended in a draw (by rep.)

Sorry,
23.Nh5 (23.Nf5)

shirov-mamedyarov drew and svidler-leko drew- hopefully at least one game will be decisive in round 1 – my least favorite player here is probably leko- the guy has no will to win
