CHENNAI: The confidence after beating Veselin Topalov seemed to missing on Saturday. World champion Viswanathan Anand chose a dangerous opening sacrifice in the Slav Defence against Etienne Bacrot of France and paid the penalty for being too reckless in an ending in the Pearl Spring super chess tournament at Nanjing.

The defeat pulled him back from the second position, which is now with the French GM, and also enhanced World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen’s chances of winning the tournament.

Carlsen staved off a stiff resistance from Vugar Gashimov of Azerbaijan, who kept an extra pawn in a rook and bishop ending of Ruy Lopez. Gashimove fancied his chances as he had a passed pawn but when Carlsen won back the extra pawn he also earned a half point, which gave him clear lead with three points. Bacrot, with two wins in the tournament so far, has 2.5 points.

Anand sacrificed his bishop on move 8 for three pawns and looked safe as Bacrot lost one more pawn on the way to simplifying the position.
