This one is hard especially when the diagram is on the previous page.
exf6 Qxc2 fxg7 Rg8 Nd4
So now the queen is attacked and black’s central king is being threatened with a rook check.
But it’s not mate is it?
That’s Lilienthal-Capablanca, isn’t it? 1.exf6 Qxc2 2.fxg7 Rg8 3.Nd4 with threat Re1.
exf6, QxQ (if not loss of material)
exg7, Rg8
Nd4 followed by Re1…I am thinking this is the line.
This looks familiar but I can’t recall where I saw it.
I saw this one in a book, exf6 is the answer, I cant recall the famous game.
1 exf6 Qxc2
2 fxg7 Rg8
3 Nd4 Qxc3
4 Re1+ Ne5
5 Rxe5+ Kd7
5 Re7+ Kd6
6 Nb5+ winning the Q
If 3 . . . Qd3
4 Re1+ Ne5
5 Rxe5+ Kd7
6 Rd5+! Ke8
7 Re1+ and mate to follow
does black escape with 3 . . . Qb2? I doubt it but not enough time to calculate the variation!
exf6 qxq
fxg7 rg8
nd4 with the open e file
looks tempting…
h
it’s Lilienthal vs. Capablanka…
1. e5xf6 Qxc2 and so on, I believe.
hahaha, sharp eye tactics at the chess top level a couple of days ago…
1. exf6! Qxc2
2. fxg7 Rg8
3. Nd4 followed by Ra-e1+
and black is in trouble.
1. exf6!
I also can’t remember the famous game this is from, but it continues with
1… Qxc2
2. fxg7 Rg8
3. Nd4
I need to study it longer to remember how it finishes.
Lilienthal vs Capablanca
(Hastings 1935)
1. exf6 Qxc2
2. fxg7 Rg8
3. Nd4 with Re1 coming seems pretty convincing.
1.exf6! Qxc2
2.fxg7 Rg8
3.Nd4 with Nxc2 or deadly Rae1+. 3…Qe4
4.Rae1 Nc5
5.Rxe4+ Nxe4
6.Re1 Rxg7
7.Rxe4+ Kd7 1-0
Lilienthal-Capablanca
Well done Andor Lilienthal, one of the few people to beat Capablanca.
