Interesting. I read somewhere that Anand’s FIRST name is Anand, his last name is Viswanathan. I checked Wikipedia, where this is not mentioned at all. But in this interview his father’s name indicated as Viswanathan Iyer. Thus his family name really must be Viswanathan, in which case Anand is his first name.
Susan, unlike the other video content on your blog, this particular video keeps launching automatically. I believe this problem can be solved by simply changing “autoplay=1” to “autoplay=0” in the code of this post.

Since neither you nor I actually knows how Indian names work, I’d prefer to hear and Indian on this matter.
as a south indian myself, let me take this opportunity to shed some light on this. south indian nomenclature has 4 major components – place of origin, father’s name, first name, and clan/caste. The first and fourth are usually dropped in recent times.
so in the case of vishwanathan anand – vishwanathan is his father’s name and anand is his name.
in his father’s case – vishwanathan iyer, the place of origin and father’s(anand’s grandpa) name have been dropped. vishwanathan is his first name.

Those of you from the southern part of India have a unique challenge in this day and age 🙂
One of my friends dropped all his name-components except his own-name — and made it both his first and last name. So in Anand’s case, it would be “Anand Anand” 🙂
