RVCC to offer youth chess classes

NORTH BRANCH —The Corporate & Continuing Education (CCE) division at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) in North Branch is offering two chess classes this winter.

Chess I (Beginners) is for students ages 7 to 14 to learn the basics of chess playing, including the rules, the equipment, how the pieces move and their relative values and how to achieve victory by checkmating the opponent. The class will take place Saturdays, Feb. 21 to March 28, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The fee is $112.

Chess II (Advanced Beginners) is for students ages 7 to 14 who already are familiar with chess. Topics include a general look at opening ideas and the study of tactics, including pins, discovered attacks, skewers and double attacks. The class will be held Saturdays, Feb. 21 to March 28, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The fee is $112.
