In the penultimate round both ELO favourites, GMs Daniel Fridman and Igor Khenkin lost their games to the leader GM Michael Prusikin and to GM Klaus Bischoff, respectively.
While Prusikin won a good game, the other encounter was a blunderfest. On the 36th move Khenkin could have checkmated his opponent in three moves.
Instead of taking the f4 pawn (as Khenkin played), there was a check from h3… and then it is easy. And there were other gross mistakes from both sides in this game.
Prusikin continues to lead, he will face Bischoff in the final round. GM Arik Braun, who nicely defeated GM Rainer Buhmann, is the third player who preserves chances for the gold medal.
