Wanting to prove to the world that he still remembers how the little horsies move, Gata Kamsky defeated the young prodigy Magnus Carlsen in the 2nd game of their match yesterday to even up the score and avoided elimination. Earlier today, Gata then went on to win both his playoff games to finish 9th in the World Cup.
Congrats to Gata Kamsky for the wonderful results. I know he expected more of himself but this is excellent for such little preparation. I fully expect him to do even better in Corus in 2006.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Susan I hear there is a rumor running around that after Kamsky lost the first game to Carlsen you made an emergency phone call to Gata and reminded him how the horsie moves. It was just what he needed to win 3 in a row.
It was wonderful. I feel like Gata has returned to his old self.
I am all excited to watch him in the US Championships along with Susan Polgar. and other great American players.
then on to WAZ and the Candidates.
Great chess coming our way. hold on to your seats. this is going to be a fun ride.
And it will be nice to see Magnus again in the Candidates. He is impoving so fast. He is fun to watch. I hope he does well also.
I dont know what I am going to do. I want everyone to win.

Gata won 6-1 in the tournament. the same as the 2nd place.
if gata had waited until the last round to take his loss he would be in 2nd place.
I am very proud of gata. He is doing incredibly well. it has all been a good warm up. Gata has certainly performed way beyond my expectations in this tournament.
I seem to remember almost a year ago he was coming back and taking the games kind of easy does it. but now he really has found his confidence again. and that is so wonderful. I am sure there is still some work to do.
I hope to watch the US Championships with Susan and Gata battling it out for first place.
Those horsies will be all over the place.
I just now looked it up.

the us championship does not begin until the end of february and runs in early March. I was thinking it was next month. that must be WAZ in January.

Gata was a little lucky that he won the second playoff game. Magnus was totally winning, but made a big blunder in time pressure. But Gata is the strongest of these players, so it was fair enough. I think Magnus became a little tired and homesick the last days. He said that in an interview :-)But he is a fighter and fun to watch. He could have played a drawish game after his 1-0 victory, but he wants to win every game.
Gata will win the US Championship this year and Susan will win the US Womens Championship and that’s how it should be.
Don’t count out Hikaru and Vigarito though.
Yes, but the obvious favorite will be Tate.
