1. Ng5+ fxg5 2. Qf7+ Qxf7 3. d8N!#
1. Ng5+ fg5 2. Qf7+ Qxf7 3. d8NX
W does not have many options
1 check
2 check
3 checkmate
Wancey Yard
1.Ng5+ PxN
2.Qf7+ QxQ
3.Pd8=N++
1.Ng5+ PxN
2.Qf7+ QxQ
3.Pd8=N++
At first I thought this was the solution:
1.Ng5+ fxg5
2.d8N+ Qxd8
3.Qf7#
but while making the moves on the board I immediately realised d8N+ was an illegal move. Luckily the order of the moves can be changed!
1.Ng5+ fxg5
2.Qf7+! Qxf7
3.d8N##
1Ng5 2 Qf7 3knight under promotion
does the trick
I didn’t see the puzzle a yera ago but it looks like Ng5+ fxg5 d8=N+ Qxd8 Qf7# is the ticket
Though I havn’t seen it before, this looks rarely obvious to me:-)
Give check in every move, don’t give black king escape fields, first move must take away the f7 escape field and open f file, next deflect black queen, all moves enforced:
1. Ng5+ fxg5
2. Qf7+ Qxf7
3. d8=N#
1. Ng5+ fxg5
2. Qf7+ Qxf7
3. d8(N)++
ng5+ and a reincarnation will mate. han
1. Ng5+ fxg5
2. Qf7+ Qxf7
3. d8=N#
Best regards
Stef
I didn’t see it a year ago, but I can solve it.
Ng5+ fxg5
Qf7+ Qxf7
d8/N mate
Tim Looooves Tiffanie!
1. d8=N+ Qxd8 2. Ng5+ fxg5 3.Qf7#
1Ng5+ fxg5
2d8=N+ Qxd8
3Qf7#
Anonymous pointed out that my 2d8=N is illegal.Since I have already touched d pawn I am compelled to take black Q and black delivers mate by 2…. Na5#.
I remember it well. Like one of the commenters, I remember briefly thinking that an earlier underpromotion move was legal when it was not.
1. Ng5+ fg5 2. Qf7+ Qf7 3. d8=N#
By the way, 1.Ng5+ fg5 2.d8=N+ is impossible because the d pawn is pinned. So there is only one solution.
Hi Susan Polgar,
Nice puzzle – nothing needs to be added further from my side.
