Pangasinan’s chess whiz kids hailed

Dagupan City (July 14) — Three chess whiz kids from Pangasinan topped the recent 10th Asean Age Group Chess championship in Hue, Vietnam.

Gold Medalist Cherry Ann P. Mejia, a 14-year old 3rd year high school student of Colegio de San Juan de Letran who hails from Poblacion, San Jacinto Pangasinan together with nine–year–old Samantha Glo C. Revita, who took a silver and eight–year–old Dennis Guttierez, Jr, a bronze medalist, received commendation from the provincial government.

The three chess wizard paid a courtesy call on Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. who was even more elated when told that the kids were just “trained at home” by their guardians and parents.

Mejia, who started playing chess at the age of nine, snatched a gold medal in the 9-round standard crosstable chess in the 14 and below age category defeating other contestants from participating countries including Vietnam, the host country.

Mejia was named as Most Valuable Player during the 2007 World Asean Age Group Chess Championship held at Danang, Vietnam, and now a member of the Federation of Chess Champions. She has already hauled 50 medals.

Revita, who hails Rosales town, received a special commendation from the sangguniang panlalawigan, for winning multiple medals in the same chess competition. She started playing chess at the age of three.
