Frank Procopio was 12 when his cousin Jack taught him how to play chess.

Two weeks after his first lesson, Procopio won a door prize at his hometown movie theater outside Syracuse, N.Y.

The prize? A chess set.

That was 47 years ago and Procopio is still enjoying the game. For 20 years, he has passed on his enthusiasm for and knowledge of chess to elementary students.

Procopio, 59, a resident of Parsons Manor in Wilkes-Barre, spends every Tuesday night at SS. Peter and Paul School, Plains Township, teaching chess to 14 students in second through eighth grades.

“Chess is something that was made available to me, and now I would like to make it available to kids around here, too,” Procopio said.

He’s been teaching chess to school children on a volunteer basis for 20 years.
