Kids ‘check’ their progress

NATICK – It’s hard to imagine a roomful of 40 kids could ever be this quiet.

But with a championship on the line, the chess board in front of them is all they care about. Welcome to the high stakes competition of the Massachusetts State Scholastic Chess Championship.

Students from four age groups battled at the senior center yesterday for the state championship title in their division, an honor even the youngest looked hungry for as they hunched over their boards.

“I’m a little upset,” said Sherborn’s Achutha Ramen, 13, after losing his second game to one of the highest ranked players in his age group. “But I’m going to try to focus on the next game.”

Ramen started playing chess when he was 4 after watching his older sister. He likes not just the game but also competition.

“You have to be focused because you have to try to not make mistakes,” he said.
