Meeting of Dacic and chess player Karpov
18 August 2010

In the talks with chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov, Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has expressed gratitude of the Serbian people for the former’s friendship he has shown in the past few decades. Karpov took our side at the times most difficult for the state and the people, so I believe the decision of the Serbian Chess Federation to support his candidature for the president of the World Federation is right, stated Dacic. He has stressed that especially important for Serbia is Karpov’s decision to choose as the Vice President renowned Serbian player Alisa Maric.

Karpov has reminded that he became the world champion at the Chess Olympics in Skopje, in 1972, and added he was glad that Belgrade is the chess capital. He also added that FIDE will support the development of children’s and school-level chess, as well as strive to regain a professional level to that sport.
