GUANGZHOU: The start of round seven of the women’s team event at Guangzhou Chess Institute on Wednesday afternoon was delayed after a dispute.

Uzbekistan’s and Iran’s National Olympic Committees raised an official protest, saying that a mismatch might easily award more points to the higher-ranked team.

Another pairing also ended in dispute when top-ranked China was drawn against Jordan, who is at the bottom of the scoreboard with zero points. Pairings are done by computer during chess events at the Asian Games.

According to Asian Games Chess Pairing Committee chair Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Uzbekistan complained again but no official protest was lodged. The postponed round commenced at 5 p.m. — JP
