Asiad: RP men’s chess team finishes 2nd

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine men’s chess team settled for silver in the 16th Asian Games on Friday after clashing with China in the finals of the chess tournament.

The scores were 0.5-3.5 in favor of the Chinese squad in the 9th and final round of the tournament held at the Guangzhou Chess Institute.

Filipino grandmaster (GM) Wesley So split the point with GM Wang Yue while his Filipino team mates lost their matches.

GM John Paul Gomez bowed to GM Wang Hao, GM Darwin Laylo lost to GM Zhou Jianchao, and GM Eugene Torre got beaten by GM Ni Hua.

The Philippine team reached the finals by beating second-seed India, 2.5-1.5 on Thursday night.

As of posting, the Philippines had a total of 16 medals: 3 golds, 4 silvers and 9 bronzes.
