NATIONAL champion Manoj Kumar strolled on to successfully defend the 30th Fiji Bitter Chess Championship at Pasifika Campus over the weekend.

Kumar overcame arch rivals Dr Neel Arora who won last month’s Courts-sponsored championship.

The schoolteacher settled his score at four and a half and Arora was second on four points while Junior champion Gaurav Raicker finished at third spot.

Fiji National University architecture student Dominiko Tabao surprisingly caused the upset of the championship in the under 18 category.

Tabao was instrumental in helping his FNU team scoop the overall tam competition during the inter-tertiary championship, a fort night ago.

Saint Joseph Secondary School student Hilda Vakaloloma stamped her reign in the women’s division outclassing her opponents in every game.

She won the category with six points followed closely by Amy Bale of Assemblies of God High School who scored five points. Neelam Kumar of SJSS was third with four points.

Fiji Chess Federation president Dr Virgilio De Asa said the tournament was a great success despite the fact that they waited for two years to have the competition again.
