Mamedyarov – J. Polgar [E17]
Essent – Round 3 (10-24-2006)
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Bb7 5.Bg2 Be7 6.Nc3 0–0 7. O-O Ne4 8. Bd2 f5 9. Qc2 Bf6 10. Rad1 (This is still all theories. The most popular continuation is 10…Nxc3 11.Bxc3 Be4)
10…Nxc3 11.Bxc3 Be4 12.Qc1 d6 13.Bh3 (We are still in theories. No new move has been made. 13…Qe8 and 13…Nd7 are both fine.)
13…Qe8 14.Ne1 (This is a new move. 14.Ng5 is the more traditional line. Generally speaking, this can’t be a big improvement. I would not worry so much about this move. 14…Qa4 comes to mind.)
14…Nd7 (A logical and solid move.)
15.f3 Bb7 16.Nd3 Qh5 (This is like a heavyweight boxing bout. The two fighters are slowly and cautiously testing the water.)
17.Nf4 Qh6 18.Bg2 Bg5 (The position is somewhat equal. I do not expect much to happen out of this position.)
19.h4 Bxf4 20.Qxf4 (Now if Judit exchanges Queens, the game is basically even. This looks like a draw.)
20…Qxf4 21.gxf4 Nf6 22.Kf2 Nh5 23.e3 a5 24.Bh3 d5 25.cxd5 exd5 26.Rc1 Rae8 27.Rc2 Ba6 (White is slightly better because of the Bishop pair. Black should be able to hold.)
28.Rfc1 Bd3 29.Rd2 Bb5 30.Rdc2 Bd3 31.Rd2 Bb5 32.b3 Re6 (White has nothing to lose by pushing in the position. White is playing for 2 results.)
33.Rdc2 Bd3 34.Rd2 Bb5 35.Rdc2 Bd3 36.Rb2 Rfe8 37.Bd2 Rg6 (The position is still equal)
38.Be1 Rge6 39.Bd2 Rg6 40.Be1 Rge6 1/2 (This is a good result for Judit, drawing with Black. Now both Mamedyarov and Judit have 2.5 / 3)
It looks like Topalov is going to have an interesting game, personaly I like white’s position more but my computer dissagrees … perhaps it is just taste …
Judit seems to be fine and she went for the queens indian, quite solid!
D.K.
Sokolov thinking too much here isn’t exd4 still theory?
D.K.
10…Nxd2 instead of 10…Nxc3 is slightly better according to Rybka
Where can i see the Topa game live?
http://www.essentchess.nl/live/tfdweb.htm

Qe5 seems better than Qc5
WTF? is Topalov doing Na2? (maybe I just don’t get it …)
… but I definetly prefer black!
D.K.
Ou now I see the novelty, Rf5 was played before if I’m not mistaken …
D.K.
There is some mistake on the Essent server. 12. Qc1 not 12. Be4 Qc1
For the moment the game is look equal.
But in other game Topalov again is not Topalov. WTF is that Na2?
Correct web link is:

😉
Susan, Thank you for the link to the web cam…it nice to see the look on Manedyarov face, which seems a bit stressed. As I have said before, your coverage is superior to all of the other chess sites. Please keep it up. Go Judit!
lol thanks for the webcamera link but where is Judit – only dont tell me that in on WC 😀
Topalov looks more then ok now Na2 was a good move after all (it took me some time to see that Rf5 solves any direct attack – it is an obvious move but Na2 trows you off guard).
I think that it will be dificult for black to hold this … maybe if he returns the pawn at the right moment?!
D.K.
lol how you see the stress on the on Manedyarov face over 4 pixels?
Susan what do you think about Topalovs game? (he seems to have a lot going on but no clear way or at least I dont see one after 20. … Qe6 -> simple but effective)
D.K.
After 13 … Qe8 what is the best for Mamedyarov? 14.Ng5 equalizes …
I am following on the essent link- rre the clock times accurate??

Refresh the page once in a while …
D.K.
He he Mamedyarov looking at the position from a new angle 😀
D.K.
Clocks are acurate but moves are not – Be4 is repeated erroneously.
Topalov 1:53 – Sokolov 0:43
Sokolov thinking a lot this game but for now Topalov have a chance to win.
Topalov write a new book?
How to beat I.Sokolov in 10 minutes
Is anyone having a long delay with the web cam images? Just wondering.
Many Thanks.
Sokolov must have some defenisve resources here.
Topalov shouldn’t go all out for a win. If one is not evident, then a draw would be good for him.
Did Mamedyrov just blunder a pawn after:
14.Ne1 Qh5 15.Bg2 Bxg2 16.Nxg2 Qxe2 17.Nf4 Qxc4
Ok in my line white drops two pawns so I guess this is not the best defence but e2 is lost (however you look at it!)
Go JUDIT 3-0! (pawn grab!)
D.K.
Surprised at speed of Topalov’s play ….its not as if he is an Anand and we know he is not that good at rapid!
Sokolov should go …Qd5 then …f6 with every chance of holding the rook ending
Qh5 Susan -> you must have been looking from blacks pespective?!
D.K.
Ups sorry didn’t see a2! (nevermind please)
D.K.
GM Polgar has a rock solid defense. I see, barring a hideous blunder, a draw at worst.
Still too early to know for sure.
Great Game! Go Judit! Hope she makes it 3-0 today!

David, I believe you’re right all the way to 17…Qc4, after that the queen must retreat to c6. white win a pawn and exchanges light square bishops….who has an advantage after that only Susan knows.
After 14 … Qh5 the slight advantage goes from White to Black. 14. Ng5 was better than 14. Ne1
Topalov playing bullet ?! (I think he shuld calm down a bit …)
D.K.
In Toplaov game now just 28…a6 29.b4 Red8-white has only small plus. Draw!
14..g5 would be my choice
Topalov Game
Black can alos just go 28..Red8 29.Rd8 Rd8 as 30.Ba7 Ra8 31.Bd4 Ra2 is draw
Why do I feel like Judit’s game will be a draw?
what do you think?

Well Meybe white has something but after going a few moves further:
14.Ne1 Qh5 15.Bg2 Bxg2 16.Nxg2 Qxe2 17.Nf4 Qxc4 18.b3 Qc6 19.Nxe6 Re8 20.Rfe1
I am not able to find that much activity for the pawn so I prefer white here, pity that Judit did’t go for the pawn grab. (blac is perhaps slightly behind in development bu after 20. … Nd7 even that is not an issue, I must be missing something)
D.K.
I’d be very happy with Black here. White cannot play the freeing e3-e4 any time soon. Now if only Judit could figure out a way to exchange that Bf6 for the White Knight…
Susan,
I cannot figure out what the “Essent” tournament is all about, what its significance is and what the significance of the crown group is and how they are chosen. Can you for your “amateur” readers when you get a chance, explain a little about this tournament and how it works. That can be useful for other tournaments also. I am rooting for Judit by the way.
Thanks, Sincerely,
A chess aficionado
I prefer Sokolov’s position to Topalovs now (mainly because there are mate threats), and Rg8+, Rd8 both look good! I’m afraid for Topy now playing so fast if he gets beaten it is entirely his fault!
D.K.
Why did Topalov just sacrifce a rook?
Or, is my computer interface a few moves behind. Somebody check quick!
sorry…it was a computer malfunction.
David, 14.Ne1 Qh5 15.Bg2 Bxg2 16.Nxg2 Qxe2 17.Nf4 Qxc4 18.b3 Qc6 19.Nxe6 Re8 20.Rfe1

To be honest I stop my analysis after the Queen retreat to c6…Judit had played another move. However, in my opinion, black had a sliver on advantage due to her material advantage. If we had the time to break this down using Silman’s 7 imbalances; what would we find? Black has a plus in material and white has a plus in initiative and everything else is equal. Black must play on the King side as this is where her space is…like I said, only Susan knows.
e4c5 – The Essent tournamenet usually invites a (former) world champion, the best female player in the world (always the same…), the youth world champion and the best (highest rated) Dutch player.
Tapa – Sokolov 1/2 -1/2
Funny in complicated positions Topa doen’t think but now now he starts thinking like Ke2 and eventual draw isn’t obvious.
D.K.
Draw IMO
Boring but sound play by Judit. She does not allow tactical complications. Mamedyarov has to accept positional play. Draw most likely.
The QID was a very solid opening choice for Judit — and somewhat unexpected considering her tournament performance. I might have expected something like the Modern Benoni.
Then again, perhaps it could just be exhaustion after two high-tension games.

what is boring about the position after move 25 ??? ‘u guys don’t like endgames, do you? it is a very interesting position in my eyes; that doubled pawn in the f-line might become very strong … as Botvinnik never got tired to mention … 🙂
Topalov’s b4 looks bad after …f4!
Position after ..f4 just dead
Will Memedaryov take the draw?
Comp is saying that Topalov is lost?!
D.K.
Topy going down hard … por guy (must be on the end of his nerves!)
D.K.
Mamedyarov had the opportunity to draw after 28….Bd3 29 Rd2 Bb5 30 Rdc2 Bd3 31 Rd2 Bb5, but he didn’t.
Gabor
What is the idea behind 37… Rg7 ??
Topalov made mistake with Kf4?? instead should have gone b5 so that if …Kc4? he brings rook to d6.
Now he may be losing.
Topalov as mad as it sounds perhaps thinks he is playing for the win. He has his eyes set on a Q vs Q endgame, in which his h-pawn will be the most advanced of the pawns left on the board and blacks own f-pawn could offer some cover from checks.
That’s desperate hustler chess I’d think.
Did Mamedyrov blunder or is just my chessengine that s****?
D.K.
Well played by Mamedyarov. Now he is clearly better.
the entity Topanailov returns to earth … the aliens were not joking telling the entity: we’ll take your shadow away from you
(especially this no.1 ranking bosh – sounds pretty much like – ok, ok, ok …:(( ) – it’s alike monopoly: go straight to the jail, don’t move over start, don’t earn 4000 bucks (btw – i’ve never played the american parker original monopoly – so i translated the appropriate card to that, what i call english…)
interestingly – if the entity will lose against sokolov, it’s performance rating will drop beneath my overall rating – watch out chess world – i’m coming …LOOOOL
eh… but what the heck is Sokolov doing? impressed by name???
Good draw, Judit. Strategically sound play
Vohaul, I think you already apologized about “entity”.
OK. Optically Shak looked better with bishop pair and the akward black c-pawn, but seems like Judit could generate enough tactical counterplay just in time. Wonder if Mamedyarov played the most accurate moves. His position did look promising.
GM Judit Polgar the future World Chess Champion!
Those words sound delightful!
She might be able to in the not-too-distant future!
Hmm don’t know but now Topy looks like he has winning chances?!
D.K.
Wups didn’t se that … draw!
D.K.
