Knight Raiders bring national title home to Tech

Red Raiders are no strangers to competition, but it’s not every day a team in red and black soars from underdog to champion in collegiate Final Four tournament.

But last week, the Knight Raiders of Tech’s Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence, brought home its first (Final Four) national title.

They did so by edging out top-ranked powerhouses University of Maryland-Baltimore County and the University of Texas at Dallas, the two schools that have dominated the tournament since it opened 11 years ago.

It was the team’s second showing in the national tournament. Last year, the Knight Raiders took third place. This year’s win made Polgar, the team’s head coach, the first female coach to lead a men’s team to the title.
