How about
1 Bxh7 Kxh7
2 Qh5+ Kg8
3 Rh4
loses the rook. hold on. lets try.
3 Ng6 fxg6
4 Rxf8 mate.
but what about.
3 Ng6 f5
4 Qh8 Kf7
5 Qxf8 Kxg6
and not sure how to proceed from here.
I should say that Qxd8 wins the bishop but I dont find how to mate the king. and winning the bishop seems to get the white queen away from the king to get the mate.
anyway I obviously see the Qxd8 but dont think that is the move.
maybe something cute like:
Nxd5 Bxd5
Bxh7+ Kxh7
Rf6!? (threat Ng6) Bxf6
Rxf6 gxf6
Ng4 f5
Qg5+ Kh7
Qh6+ Kg8
Nf6++
this puzzle seems harder than the rest but this is all I can find without moving pieces and I am not sure if I would play this line in a real game for fear that I am not calculating everything.
woops, throw in a Qh5+ Kh7 before Rf6!?
What about
1 Bxh7 Kxh7
2 Qh5+ Kg8
3 Ng6 fxg
4 Txf8++
or
1 Bxh7 Kh8
2 Ng6+ fxg
4 Txf8+ Kxh7
5 Dh5++
p.s. Susan, thanks for this blog!
1.Lxh7+ Kg8xh7 2.Qe2-h5+ Kh7-g8 3.Ne5-g6 f7-f5 4.Qh5-h8+ Kg8-f7 5.Qh8xf8+ Kf7xg6 6.Qf8xd8
1.Lxh7 Kg8-h8 2.Qe2-h5 Nd5-f6 3.Rf4xf6 Rf8-e8 4.Ne5-g6+ f7xg6 5.Bh7xg6+ Kh8-g8 6.Qh5-h7#
I say 1.Qh5 g6 (not h6 because the Queen is threatening BOTH h7 AND f7!) 2.Nxg6 (Black can ignore the threat. But why lose material?) hxg6, 3.Bxg6 fxg6, 4.Rxf8+ Kg7, 5.Qh8#
1. Bxh7+ Kxh7 (.. Kh8 2. Ng6) 2. Qh5+ Kg8 3. Ng6! and black’s king is in awful trouble.
I was surprised, it took only a few minutes to find the lovely Ng6 idea. Nice puzzle!
