Re2 suggests itself, threatening Rd2. King can’t run, and if Queen captures Qd5+ leads to mate. If Qe4 Rd2+
Re2 seems pretty strong. Threatening to pin the queen or mate in two.
1. Re2!
… threatening Rd2 and win the queen. If 1… Qxe2?
2. Qd5+, Qe6+, Qe7++ mate.
Neither 1… Qd1+ 2.Kh2,
nor 1…Ke8 2.Qxc8 can prevent black from material loss.
…furthermore to my post,
if black queen moves anywhere away from the d-file, white will play Rd2+ followed by Qxc8+
1.Re2 Qd1+ 2.Kh2 and black will lose the queen due to the mate threat.

Qc6 Qd7
Qf6+ Ke8
Kf2 Qf7
Qe5+ Kd7
Rd1+ Kc6
Qc5+ Kb7
Qxb5+ Ka8
Qa6+ Kb8
Bc5 Rd8
Rb1++
Kf2 is to play Qd1 and try and deflect the queen.
Qf3 looks good
Qf3 looks good
Qf3 looks good
One interesting line could be…
1. Re2! Qxe2
2. Qd5+ Ke8
3. Qe6+ Kd8
4. Qe7#
also maybe
1. Re2! Qb3
2. Rd2+ Ke8
3. Qxc8+ +-
It’s from a Morphy game, isn’t it?
Re2 is better than Qf3 (which is what I thought of) because it sticks on the R on c8, so Black can’t try to escape with Ke8.
Re2 Rg7
Rd2 Qxd2
Bxd2 Rd7
Re2 just makes it an even game but I dont see how it leads to a mate. now the game is headed to a draw. I thought the purpose of these problems was to find mating sequences.
I am worried about my chess abilities. I completely overlooked 1. Rd2. I messed up with 1. Qf3. that is countered with 1..Qe4.
Good job to all the solvers.
i dont think Re2 is that great a move. it just leads to material gain and a drawn position. Qc6 gives the opportunity for a win and a draw at worst. the object is to win i thought not try and even a position into a draw.
