Karpov Talks about the Benefits of Playing Chess

Havana, April 23.- Russian chess master Anatoly Karpov highlighted the importance of playing chess from early childhood for the children’s mental development, as he spoke in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana about the benefits of chess.

The former world champion, who is participating in a simultaneous match in Havana, gave details on how the science-game relates to life, which is the topic of one of his most recent books published in English, French, and Chinese.

Chess contributes to the understanding of other school subjects and prepares the child to analyze situations and make decisions quickly, said Karpov.

One needs to be prepared to face a game in the same way as you need to know how to face life’s events and how to make a plan in order to succeed. And in both cases you need motivation to seek victory, explained the chess master during the lecture, which is the second he has given, after that in 2004.

Playing chess also helps develop relationships between people from different generations, noted Karpov, who also mentioned the contributions of learning the game in the prevention of alcoholism and drug addiction, thanks to the work of the International Chess Federation and the Russian authorities.
