When I conduct a chess class, one of the things that I always stress is double and triple check everything before you move. In the position above, Black is a 2661 (FIDE) rated player and one of the most talented young players in the world.
Here, Black decided to play 32…c3?? Why? He thought that if 33.Rxc3, he can then play 33…Bh3 and if White plays 34.Rxd8 then Rb1 checkmate! In this case, he wins and if White does not take the pawn with 33.Rxc3 then he will play Rc4 next move to support his pawn.
What he forgot is 34…Rb1 is NOT a checkmate because White can defend with 35.Rd1. Ooops! Not only he lost a pawn, the Bishop on c8 is pinned and cannot be protected. Game, set, match!
It happened to the best in the world! So make sure to double check EVERYTHING!
“Ooops! Not only he lost a pawn, the Bishop on c8 is pinned and cannot be protected.” I don’t understand, I thought this bishop was on h3…?
Something akin to the BxKRP blunder by Fischer- Spassky 1st game,1972. He thought he could sac his bishop & storm down the K-side with his pawns. Clearly he miscalculted somewhere tho I cant recall what was highlighted in the article.
Kotov calls blunders like these “Dizziness due to success”
Blumenfeld’s rule applies in every situation.
Yes, Karjakin lost it, but he will learn from his mistakes.
I make even siller mistakes than this all the time. well not all the time. but sometimes.
Time trouble maybe…. just ok, no need to criticize.
Don’t tell me you have been too perfect not to make similar mistake in your perfect career?
Kudos!
Here is the game:

I still dont think I can beat Karjakin.
“Don’t tell me you have been too perfect not to make similar mistake in your perfect career?”
When did she ever said that? She is just offering good advise.
haha I’m better than a 2600+ grandmaster! I would not have that problem at all because I would just see 1…c3 2. Rxc3 and I lost a pawn. All this 2…Bh3 nonsense is too deep for me – I just lost a pawn gddmit!
Indeed. A computer or a poor player might go through all those unnecessary permutations but a truly great player would see immediately that Rxc3 wins a pawn and from his extensive chess knowledge know that losing a pawn is usually a bad thing.
to all of those “c3 simply loses a pawn” – babblers:
please put the bishop from f3 back to h1 in the given position – black is still at move…
1.c3! rxc3? (the pawn winning move)
2.bh3! rxd8 (the rook winning move)
3.rb1+ rd1 (the forced move)
4.rxd1# (the winning move …)

Well, when you move all the pieces like that, then black will win. But jeez that sure is heck too much thinking: if someone played 1…c3 (with the bishop on h1), then I bet my labor union has fought against him before, and that the person also commits high-tech securities fraud. It’s typical of those types of people: calculating (conniving), and has no reservations of sacrificing his newbie slaves (the c4 pawn) or even someone who has been with his company for years (the rock solid d8 rook) to get what he wants. The move 1…c3 disgusts me.
Ever notice that a lot of blunders are due to miscalculations on backward diagonal retreats???
“Here, Black decided to play 32…c3?? Why? He thought that if 33.Rxc3, he can then play 33…Bh3 and if White plays 34.Rxd8 then Rb1 checkmate!”
How do you know that this is what he thought? Has he told you? Can you read minds? Or just guessing? Maybe he was in a hurry to go to WC, or just followed one of the rules from your friends, push the passed pawn?
“When did she ever said that? She is just offering good advise.”
Sometimes you don’t have to say what you mean. This is not a trial, Susan us just humiliating some GMs by showing us that they are really not GM strength, and that the title became corrupted.
We seem to have a lot of trolls lately posting stupid things.
eh you got anythin smatuh ta post?
@labor union anonym – great commentary – one of the best – and most enjoyable – i’ve read here, since a while. Way to go – dear “brother in minds” – but PLEASE – please give yourself a HANDLE!
