MANGALORE: Five drawn games and one decisive result characterised a rather uneventful fifth round in the 46th National A chess championship on Sunday.

Defending champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly (4) of Indian Oil Corporation went for a quick draw against IM Sriram Jha (1.5) of Life Insurance Corporation of India from a Grunfeld variation in 17 moves.

GM Parimarjan Negi of Indian Airlines became the only player to garner a full point on Sunday when he put it across IM Ponnuswamy Konguvel of PSPB.

Negi, who did not accept the stray pawn on b4, went for an attack with h4. Later, he walked his king to g3 from c1 square to avoid tactical threats. Konguvel blundered by moving his queen from the defence and he resigned when mate in three was inevitable.

World u-16 champion IM B Adhiban (1) of Tamil Nadu played the Ruy Lopez exchange variant against GM Praveen Thipsay (1) of Maharashtra.
