Cuban Reaches Quarterfinals in Carlos Torre Chess Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 19 (acn) Quesada (2 580 ELO), winner of this tournament in the 2003 edition, beat yesterday Mexican Carlos González (2 568) 1.5-0.5 and thus passed to the following round along other seven Grand Masters.

Cubans Neuris Delgado (2 549), Holden Hernández (2 580) and Lázaro Bruzón (2 622) were eliminated in this round, the last one by American Jaan Ehlvest (2 581) in the fast chess games to untie the match between them.

Neuris lost to Indian GM Pentala Harikrishna (2 659), second highest ELO in the event and runner-up in 2007, and Holden had the same fate against Ukrainian Alexander Moissenko (2 678).

This Friday Yuniseki will have a tough match against Russian Pavel Tregubov (2 646), who beat host best player Manuel León (2 535).

Moiseenko will face American Varuzhan Akobian (2 606), Harikrishna will play Ehlvest and Alexander Onischuk (2 644) from the United States will do the same against Kazakhstan’s Sadvakasov (2 643).
