This was an actual game that I played. Forget about what opening this is. Pretend that you have this position. It is Black’s move. Let’s do the following:
– Evaluate this position
– If you have a choice, which side would you take? White or Black and why?
– Try to play this position against friends or against the computer set at your level.
– Go for the win with either side.
– Then switch side and play the other side.
This will help you become a better evaluator of positions and it will also help build confidence in complicated positions.

Which side is to move?
oh, sorry, it’s Black’s, I see now.
in my opinion white is slightly better in the given position (development, pawn-structure, coordination of pieces, hidden mate threat on d8) – but white has to play very careful (queen is in a vulnarable position, king’s-position is centered, open b-file for black rook)- my choice are the BLACK…
1. … bh6? is met by 2.qf6 +-
attacking might be a plan…
1…. a5 (threatening 2. … ba4)
2.nd2 qc2 (what else? 2. … qf4, 3.qxf4 exf 4.nc4 +/- please dear white player don’t exchange the queens!)
3.rd1 bh6?!
4.qf6 rg8(4. … bxd2+?,5.rxd2 qc1+,
6.rd1 +-)
5.nc4 ba6
6.bc5 bg5
7.nd6+ nxd6
8.qxe5 nf4
9.bf3 …. and now my imagination abandons me :-)) … black might be really better now …

Vohaul
this is not analysis of a position. this is objectively picking the best continuation for some 9 moves. impossible without a computer.
and I dont understand you comment
attacking might be a plan
and then moves the rook pawn up one. that is not exactly an attacking move. or certainly not an obvious one. attacking to me is attacking the white queen position.
analyzing a postion means discussing what are the potential white attacks like pawn to g4 with queen taking on g7.
how about a discussion that black has very few moves.
how about Rh6 then Rg6 attacking the queen.
anyway we are not suppose to use a computer. and I feel like people are getting the “best” answer right off the bat in too many complicated positions. the idea is not to get the correct answer but to have a discussion of the moves. when everything is objectively the best computer move immediately it kind of kills any discussion. and I feel this position is complicated enough that it merits some discussion.
alse we are not asked for the objectively best move. we are asked to discuss the position. you dont discuss the position at all. you simply give the objectively best 9 moves. without discussion. anyone can get that from a computer. but the computer does not discuss positions.
I just dont trust the move a5 without any discussion. it is not an obvious move.
1. … bh6? is met by 2.qf6 +-
why is this +-
we are asked to discuss. this is not a discussion a +-
besides it looks equal. with a repitition of moves with Bg7 Q back to g5.
it looks to me like black maybe can force the draw with Bh6.
so lets have a discussion and learn something.
Anonymous, anonymous, please don’t pick on Vohaul! He is my friend.
“Let the one who never used a computer to analyze a position cast the first stone.”
i have not used a computer for my line – if your computer – at this trolling @anonym – shows, that my line is the best – so either you have a very old computer – or i’m stronger than i thought to be – calculating up to ten moves is a very simple task to me – my problem is, not to find the best moves …
indeed is 1. … a5 an attacking move, because it threats 2. … ba6 with
1. remove this d8 – mate threat by combining rooks and – more evident –
2. threatening mate in one
3. threatens to catch the white queen
i’m not sure what you are talking about – but for sure, you are not very experienced in chess – so – learn, learn, learn – and especially learn to distinguish computer lines from human lines …

@another anonym:
1.bh6 qf6
2.bg7 qxf7+!
3.kxf7 ng5+ +-
sincerly- your Vohaul
Vohual, on your line after 1….a5 instead of 2. Nd2 I like 2.Qd2 better with idea 0-0-0 and then Rh-e1 with many possiblities Ng5 Be2-f3 and then Ne4 and I like White’s position better since I feel the pieces are coordinated better while black’s are not and with Black monarch having to safe place to go my plan is to launch central attack and march kingside pawns if necessary. I think I can hold off any black attack on queenside meanwhile so I think black will not have time to launch an counterattack. Here is what happened when I played my computer: Hiarcs on Palm T3:
1……..a5
2. Qd2 Ba6
3. Ng5 Qxe2+
4. Qxe2 Bxe2
5. Kxe2 with what I thought was an endgame advantage but game ended in draw.
@mayanking
in the line
1…a5
2. Qd2 Ba6
3. Ng5
i excluded 3…Qxe2+ because of the possibility of
3… qxg2
4. rb1 qxh2
white will for sure gain attack now … the position is tricky – in my opinion – but still better for black to play.
sincerly, Vohaul
4. Qxe2 Bxe2
5. Kxe2
In this position, Black is worse because of the pawn islands. However, Black can force a draw by playing Bh6. White will have to play Qf6 because any other move loses the Queen. Black can then play Bg7 and repeat the pattern.
