AT A rapid chess event in Quezon City Sunday, fans were treated to the rare sight of the country’s top player ousted in the finals due to tiebreak.

But as chess legend Eugene Torre said as he awarded the fourth prize of Wesley So: “You have impressed people not only with your skill but with your humility.”

The slightly over two-week tournament, one of the four big events in the world chess circuit, starts Jan 15.

“Corus B is a really strong tournament. I will just try my best,” said So after the awarding ceremonies of the Third Knights and Kings tournament, organized by businessman Cesar Iligan, and won by grandmaster Joey Antonio.

So advanced to Group B by topping Group C last year. He is the sixth seed due to his Elo rating of 2640, but comes in as the man to beat after reaching the fourth round of the World Cup last month in Khanty-Mansiysk.
