World Chess Champion Vishwanathan Anand’s camp has hit back at Veslin Topolov for his comments slamming Anand for taking help from Gary Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik. Speaking exclusively to TIMES NOW, Anand’s wife Aruna Anand on Wednesday (May 26) said that Topolov is trying to intimidate them and that they are not bothered by such allegations.
She said, “We never really gave attention to what he said before I don’t think we are going to give attention to him now. I don’t know what his reasons are but till now we have just kept silent to whatever has been the provocation from his side. They think they are trying to intimidate us, but I think by making these allegations his is also showing his weakness quite openly.”
“I don’t know what is in their mind, but why make these allegations and what these allegations are we are really not going to be bothered. I think especially after winning the match in their own country, I don’t think we should be bothered by what they say and why they are saying it,” she added.
Earlier, in an exclusive interview to Times of India, Topalov had snubbed Anand saying that he doesn’t think Anand should be very proud of taking help from Kramnik and Kasparov. Topalov said that he doesn’t think Anand should be very proud of this and has remembered how Kasparov treated the Indian for years.
The Bulgerian also mentioned that he would never accept help from people who humiliated him for years but said Anand may be different.
He said, “I do not think Anand should be very proud of this. I remember how Kasparov treated Anand for years. And not long before the World Championship match in Bonn 2008, Anand had to stand the arrogant statements of his opponent in the press. I would never accept help from people who humiliated me for years even for free. But it seems Anand is different.”

Of course it’s not baseless. Topalov provided facts. Chessbase said the same. The Indian media is just trying to rub it in.
Bulgarians are just sore loosers..or maybe its just Topalov. Sour grapes all the way. Facts??? Yup accepting help from ramnik and kasparov (not sought but given freely) is bad but spending millions on supercomputers is acceptable?? What a jack ass…
“I do not think Anand should be very proud of this…. I would never accept help from people who humiliated me for years even for free. But it seems Anand is different.”
Ha ha ha, of course Anand’s different, he didn’t let his ego get the best of him. If accepting help (even from Kasparov) means retaining his WC title and refusing help means losing to an egocentric mania, which option will you choose Topa? Spineless beats losing any day of the week IMHO.
It easy for Topa to say “I would never accept help from people who humiliated me” after the fact, this further proves what a sour-grape he is (Sour Grape, n. the attitude of affecting to despise something because one cannot or does not have it oneself)
But seriously, the two should stop commenting on each other’s comments, it’s getting old….
Boy, just when you thought we were witnessing a more gracious and gentlemanly Topalov he gives into his Demons. Same old Topalov. That’s why Kasparov and Kramnik wanted to help Anand. Topalov’s a jerk.
Great chess player but a jerk.
The India media is completely out of line and out of context. They’re being unfair toward Topalov. They’re not gracious winner.
Shameless arrogance! Anand is not at all the gentleman many people believed him to be! He should have remained silent! Period. I, for one, don’t think that I will ever again think of him as a “gentleman.”
I like Topalov. He’s my favorite chess player!
Topalov and Danailov do not represent Bulgaria! Stop making reductive attacks on a nation because a certain chess player and his manager happen to be of that nationality! Most Bulgarians couldn’t care less about Topalov’s allegations or Anand’s backbiting!

If you don’t consider Anand as a gentleman then it is your choice!
By the way, why Topalov keeps taunting Anand by saying that Anand is not raising funds or not playing in India etc?
It is Danailov who raises the funds for chess matches and tournaments and not Topalov! So Topalov should keep quiet.
And he keeps telling that he lost the match and Anand didn’t win! Well, it is just funny. If that is the case then every match is lost by someone!
Anand lost Game1 and Game8 and Topa didn’t win? Then what did topa do with having that Super Computer and Cheparinov and Rybka4 Opening book Author on his side?
It is pointless keep dragging these issues.
It seems, Topa considers himself to be better chess player right now. That is fine. Just win Games and let others know. As he did in 2005.
But he makes subtle remarks to discredit his opponents which is not gracious.
Topa is provoking Anand since beginning of the Match by saying many things like Anand didn’t do anything to raise money and conduct the Match in India and pointing out 2800 Elo Mark etc.
So if he can go on do such ungracious things and you expect Anand to not even dismiss his remarks?
Anand just dismissed Topa’s remarks. That is it.
What ungentlemanly is there in it?
If you want to hail Topa as the greatest then do so! No one is objecting but just remember that others too have their own opinions.
Good Luck!
I think Anand has been pushed to the edge by the antics of Danailov and Topalov. It was just a matter of time before he would hit back. Anand is a gentleman, not a saint. But I hope he stops reacting to this verbal tirade.
It’s very sad a champion like Anand has joined the unofficial world champions like Kasparov from 1993, Kramnik, who was eliminated in Cazorla and nevertheless accepted the match and him now, who has won his title in a tournament where Topalov wasn’t participating, gaining the psychological upper hand because then he would be the champion. He is just complaining all the time about the location of the match, but he got 1.5 million of dollars ! If he had moved his fingers, he could have found some 5 millions in India, but even with such a favourable economic situation, he wasn’t able to get any single penny. And then they negotiated some more 100 000 dollars. And everybody thinks Anand is kind of a gentleman like Capablanca, taking everything easy and staying calm in every occasion !
I agree Anand should have ignored comments from flea bitten curs like Topalov and Danailov. These jokers never have any grace in defeat or victory. Pathetic the way Topalov was allowed to play a mediocre scapegoat like kamasky in order to give him an unfair shot at the world title. Now hopefully Kramnik, Carlsen and Aronian will put the low IQ moron in his place at the candidates.
Anand speaks through Aruna
Susan’s match summary part 2 never came through! Susan, will you share with us the reason for not publishing them so far?
Losing is pain full especially when it is very close. But Both Anand and Topa should have ended the match at Sofia. Taking the match to media and to streets are not the Anand’s way at least I have seen so far.
http://scienceandgayatrimantra.blogspot.com/ay be he wanted to tellthe world that even his opponents helped him at the hour of crisifter all it is not help on board but only of an emotional support and a few opinion sharing . Analyzing millions of moves in super computer is much more worse a crutch than that. without sides , I would add let the match be over at sofia and nothing more nothing less.
Maybe what Topalov needs is to challenge Kramnik in a boxing ring just to get it out of his system, but we all know that would be stupid, as there is no contest there either. It’s very sad to see him destroy his reputation and gain enemies at will whenever he speaks, both on n off the board. He loses fans as we speak.
After the match, everyone needs to show some grace. If you lost, as hard as it may be on you, you cannot be a sore loser. This applies to the manager as well.
Danailov and Topalov spent millions of dollars on the software, opening book etc. and made comments to provoke Anand thinking that he is a kindergarten kid who would be scared of the software and the noise made and lose the WC title. How could they forget that Anand has played at top level for 2 decades and has won WC title in all kind of formats? He is not called the ‘Tiger’ for nothing.
If spending money and making noise and allegations could get the title then all politicians across the world would have been world chess champions by now.
These jokers are now sulking like kids. Grow up and get some himility and grace. You may stand a chance to beat Anand the next time.
Let’s face it. I’m no fan of the Topa /Danailov combo, but what Topa said regarding Anand & Kasparov are true. Kasparov behaved very badly with Anand and his behaviour only diminishes his stature. The great Bobby F never did such things to his opponent. His very presence intimidated them. He did not need piece & door slamming techniques. Kasparov should have been pulled up for this long ago.
Hi Everybody,
Lets all refrain from commenting about this topic any further,so as to make both [ Anand & Topalov ]the great chess players comfortable and clam.
Good & Clever sportsmanship is,not to,let the results of the tournament, reach the heart or head, once its done.

anonymous, you could sign your writings. I don’t know if you’ve got something in your head called the brain, but i guess it’s not fulfilling its functions. Because it should tell you that there’s something between egocentric and without any will ! This is called honor and I’m very sad to see that Anand lacks of this. But so does Kramnik who accepted a match while he had lost the Candidates final against Shirov. It’s just like Nadal coming for Federer in Flushing Meadows for the final while he had lost to Del Potro in the semifinal. He should just get a lifelong ban. Anyway, it’s how a professional sport would function
Marvel, Aruna did not try either but everybody hates the horrible Danailov because he found nearly 8 millions for chess tournaments during the 5 last years. What a horrible man ! You, people who are not able to find a single penny, should just show him a little more respect. You’re just jealous !
I think Topalov needs ennemies to be at the top of his game! And Danailov constantly creates them along the way! So if that’s his style, I don’t like it, but it works pretty well for him. He’s not the world champion, but he’s still one of the top 5 best players in the world the last years. I’m bulgarian too and I agree with the previous statement that some people should not attack our nation just because Danailov or Topalov are too bulgarians! Me too, I don’t like Topalov and Danailov’s interviews, but I don’t think Anand is such a gentelemen either!
Maybe these guys should stop answering interview questions about the championship, if they cannot say anything nice, and get on with their lives?
Anand is the World Chess Champion, India shall find sponsorship for chess and super tournaments, they have 5 players on the Fide top 100 May 2010 list. Anand has not played a single tournament game in India since 2002. India is the coming super chess power, It is the time for India to sponsor more for chess.
Timothée Tournier,
I guess, you know that all managers are not same and all cannot generate same amount of funds.
No one denies Danailov generating funds but only objecting some of the things he does.
Topa has no business to taunt Anand about not raising funds.
In History of World Chess Championship, it is the challenger who tried to raise the funds for a Match and not the Champion!
So Anand is not obliged to raise more funds to play WCC while a challenger will come and play and take the money!
No one is jealous of Danailov! It is just that you can’t stand someone for some of their unusual behavior.
If you still believe people hate Danailov because they are jealous then I pity you.
There might be some people but majority people dislike Danailov not because they are jealous but they don’t like his arrogant and ungracious behavior.
Have a nice time!
