Not quite the Hilton for Stephen
by Chris Fitzgerald

CHEQUE IT OUT: Stephen Hilton with sponsor Bobby Mitchell.

VISUALLY impaired chess ace Stephen Hilton has just returned from a Euro double-header and is already plotting his next major tournament.

Morton mad Hilton, who has suffered near total blindness since birth, was involved in competitions in both Poland and Germany.
He said: “I’m exhausted. I was only back from Poland two days when I had to set off for Germany. I’ve enjoyed myself though.”

In Poland, Hilton notched 3.5 points from a possible nine and was voted Best International Player at the event.

In Germany, Hilton drew one of his five games. He said: “I didn’t do myself justice in Germany. I caught a bug and let myself down.”

Hilton then played an international event at Solihull, near Birmingham, where he finished fourth equal out of 25.

Now he’s aiming to have a crack at the World Amateur Championships in Greece next April.
