Abhijeet shocks Persson

NEW DELHI: World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta surprised overnight leader Sweden’s Tiger Hillarp Persson to reach the joint fourth spot in Group ‘C’ of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, in the Netherlands, on Friday.

Abhijeet, playing black, forced a favourable ending with an extra rook in this sixth-round encounter in Grunfeld.

The 44-move triumph took Abhijeet’s aggregate to 3.5 points, one behind top seed and leader Wesley So.

In another Group ‘C’ game, World junior girls’ champion D. Harika played out 30-move draw with Ali Bitalzadeh of the Netherlands. This draw with black pieces took Harika’s tally to three points and placed her sixth among 14 players in this 13-round competition in Group ‘C’. On Thursday, Harika drew the fifth round game with Germany’s Frank Holzke. In Group ‘B’, top seed K. Sasikiran was battling an inferior position with white pieces against Ukraine’s Andrei Volokitin.

In Group ‘A’, third seed Alexander Morozevich’s nightmare continued when he suffered his fourth loss in six games. Facing Sergei Movsesian, Morozevich played from the black side of Carokann and resigned in 34 moves. Gata Kamsky lost his first game of the competition after meeting Teimour Radjabov.

Top seed Vassily Ivanchuk drew with Levon Aronian in 56 moves while Magnus Carlsen was pressing for victory against Sergey Karjakin.
