The 6th Ferdowsi Open Tournament 2016 was held from January 28th to February 5th, in the city of Mashdad, Iran. The event was organized by the Khorasan Chess Association in a 9-round Swiss format with time control 90′ + 30″.
A total of 178 players from 18 different federation took part in the tournament, including 7 GMs and 2 IMs.
Russian players GM Pavel Maletin and IM Maksim Chigaev shared the first place at 7.5/9 points but Maletin clinched the title on a superior tie-break score.
A total of eighth players tied for the third place at 7 points each: Azeri GM Gadir Guseinov, Russian GM Dmitry Bocharov, Ukrainian GM Alexander Zubarev, GM Merab Gagunashvili from Georgia, GM Sergei Tiviakov from the Netherlands, GM Karen Grigoryan from Armenia, GM Ghaem Maghami from Iran and IM Vugar Rasulov from Azerbaijan.
