1. d3+ (-Kxd3 2. Rb3+ / -KxRb5 2. Nc3+ and then Ne4+, winning the Queen/ -Qxd3 2. Nb2+). Nice one, thank you Susan.
Rolf
Took me a while to realize I was looking for knight fork after all:
1. d3!!
I did spot this move almost immediately because Kxd3 allows the rook to skewer from b3, but discarded it almost as quickly due to KxR. Only later, after much frustration with moves like 1.Rb6 and 1.Nc3 did I take a second look. 1.d3 allows a subsequent knight fork in all other variations. One variation after the other:
1. …..Kd4
2. Rd5! Kd5
3. Nc3! Ke5
Or 3. …Kd6 or Kc5 4.Ne4 forks; or 3. …3.Kd4 Ne2 forks. Continuning:
4. d4! Kd6 (Kf4 5.Ne2 wins)
5. Ne4+-
Or;
1. …..Kb5 (Qd3 2.Nb2 is trivial)
2. Nc3! Kc5
3. Ne4+-
I really have a hard time thinking clearly when a knight is involved.
Rxa5 looks good to me (the strategy being to grab the two black pawns before trying to trade for the queen), but I’m not smart enough to see what to do after that…
Somebody help!
d3 wins the queen. Depending on Black’s move, white follows up with either Rb3+, Nb2+, or Nc3+ and Ne2+.
1. d3+! Kxb5 (a. 1. … Kxd3 2. Rb3+ 1-0; b. 1. … Qxd3 2. Nb2+ 1-0) 2. Nc3+ Kc5 3. Ne4+ and Black loses his Queen.
This one was simply brilliant!!
