This is great! Thank you!
very clever and very impressed so see this in yur blog!
Oh well, I did reasonably well against easy in a Grand Prix sicilian, though then worrying about the centre blundered the exchange, the endgame with a passed pawn could perhaps nevertheless have been possibly drawn, but then a blunder and that pawn was lost. 😉 It is always nice to reach the endgame with at least chances to draw ;).
(Oh course I did not take long with the moves, it seems ridiculous to think more than 15 seconds when the opponent always replies instantaneously.)
Yes, a Vienna worked better, 2… Nc6 variation where black played the transposition to king’s gambit in a delayed manner which I don’t think is very good. I reached a very complicated middle game where I judged I had the initiative. Unfortunately my browser crashed just as I was about the try an interesting idea, so I conclude the game ended in draw. Anyway, the black king was running a bit. 🙂
I played 1.e4 and it asked me if I wanted to resign.
Medium seems awfully easy. Will try hard tomorrow.
I beat it! …on easy. It was a good game. Does anyone know what the “elo” ratings are supposed to be for each of the levels?
the easy mode is really too easy. I didn’t even think but manage to win easily. 🙂
Is it me?? or is this program not so good even on its top level?
Seems like about only 1800 or so. I know I know..its free..but still..
I’d call it Shredder Ultra Ultra light. lol..
Hmm, somehow now I won easy very easily. Perhaps I respected it too much yesterday, or play better now simply. 🙂
Hi Susan Polgar,
I am really thankful,I have just won, only one game out of few but I am just checking the chess engine’s tactics[Logic],to feel its strength and tricks, after few more games,I will try to tame the chess engine – lol Just kidding.
By the by Susan really thank you,I will register myself in this site,if you want me to do that, let me know it.
By the by,is it possible to play Human to Human – if so let me know,we all may have the fun of playing with each other.[With really tough games ]

Oh Great!! Now I need therapy because while people here are claiming that they beat Shredder…it has mopped the floor with me at any of the 3 difficulties and any color. Actually, I swear I heard the darn thing giggle!! I need serious chess lessons FAST!!
Ok, I am impressed, I have to work on my play against the sicilian. On Yahoo thusfar I have thought my Grand Prix is good, though not optimal, but since I had trouble with easy on the centre:
I am happy, that the next book after I finish the one on the Dutch and then one the Open Sicilian, it is on the Grand Prix Attack. Now the last book on Vienna was my first true opening preparation, so perhaps there is hope for me, but really, I can do so much better against the Sicilian!
Oh in case anyone wonders, after that follows a deep book on the French, the Bishop’s Gambit of the King’s Gambit and Winning with the Stonewall Dutch.
I am happy with such, though I must say, I will be interested in playing 1. e4 e5 if white promises to play Ruy Lopez so I can follow Nisipeanu, but I really hate the Italian game.
Sorry, I said there Open Sicilian, but I meant Closed Sicilian. 🙁
Well, I guess, if I may still comment, if only out of respect, the next book would be on the Caro-Kann, which I usually beat on Yahoo, the other things I can’t take the time. Though Alekhine and Scandinavian are respectable enough for to lose to, and there is also the Polish.
Yet, after Caro-Kann, I think my curiosity will go to the Bird. Reti may be too far afield.
Oh, the Albin countergambit I did play sometimes, but it cannot be reached from 1. …e6. Perhaps I will look at something crazy for black after also the Leningrad Dutch I know.
🙂
Hi Susan Polgar,
Well, thank you for free chess engine,Shredder has won all the games except one with me,its is pretty good but I don’t think its not tamable, wait wait wait, many would pounce on me – cool, guys you all are,so fond of “Shredder”,may be just because you all have decided machine attitude is better than Human beings – lol : Cool
Hope you all have great sense of humor,I was just trying to feel Shredder with some good and bad moves for its reactions,it just got fitting enough to say,to me that,” man I know, what you do,I could handle you with ease” but I will tame the Shredder one fine day.
Okay,my ambitions apart,Shredder is cool and good – again thank you so Susan .
Talk to you all later

I beat it on easy where it let me have a mate in 1 for no reason. 😀
But it was a close game, there were some good chances on both sides. A poor slip-up to let in the checkmate, but I would fear for me at the next round of the competition (medium).
Hi Susan Polgar,
Well, guys I always choose to feel and explore the Shredder in “hard”.

Hi Susan Polgar,
This day Shredder, had beaten me black and blue,I was playing some lousiest moves, then impulsive moves, then few different opening,do you know what “Shredder” learns after every move that’s cool but weak with new openings – Oooops anybody out there to pounce on me – Cool.
Well,I got to still feel more of Shredder then I can get on to the board with mind & determination,to see Shredder looks out desperately for a draw – lol.
I think, everybody are heated now, before you all fry me,let me move now.
If possible,I will get back today again to this blog,to give some moves for this day’s puzzle.
Guys,I feel all brainy minds in this blog are my friends, irrespective of how you all feel about me,anybody uncomfortable please let me know,so catch you all later.

Hi Susan Polgar,
Today,Shredder(Hard)in one of its game with me,froze saying its thinking(may be it has correctly inferred that it may loose or end up in draw – lol ) but I can’t take credit for it because I have taken back few moves of mine earlier in the game.
I am going to be “Shredder’s”( Chess engine )friend,am I not ?I will be the friend of “Shredder” the Chess engine.
Guys, may be,I may not be visiting this site for the next few more days – I may be busy.( May not be logging on to internet at all )
See you all,later.

On easy level, I started with E4, after a long game ended up getting a pawn across, after which I had a queen and rook vs. a rook, knight & pawn; traded rooks, took knight & pawn with queen, then I won with check mate. I almost stalemated by not leaving a spot for black king to move, but I didn’t take my finger off the piece. 🙂 ZZ0
Hi Susan Polgar,

I sent an email to shredder last year
when i was playing against this engine quite often on the shredder website.
Stefan Meyer-Kahlen gave me the following information :
easy = 1000 elo
medium = 1600 elo
hard = 2200 elo
Steven
Hi Susan Polgar,
Well,Shredder Hard says that it won’t get confused, whatever may be the foolish move : It has taken me for a ride – lol.
Okay – I will take it for a ride,if not today in coming days – lol, many, now would have felt that I am saying something impossible – isn’t it ?
Wait and see – cool I am just kidding – relax.
Shredder(Chess engine)thanks for the game,I will handle you with elegance in coming days – lol

Maravilloso muchas gracias Susan, ya lo he puesto en mi blog******
hi, Susan Polgar.. i am a Phil Citizen and a student. my name is Harold”
i have a research about “Students playing chess and its benefits to academic studies”
may be you can help me give more references which is relevant to research study..
Thank you! i hope you will answer.
go me! checkmating the comp thru smith-morra gambit! 😛
OK Shredder is good, but it has demoralised me. I can beat it on easy, fine. But on medium and hard I have only managed a draw due to repetition, it allows you to play on after that and I always lose… this has affected my chess playing against humans, basically I used to play on chess servers but I am now “chess- depressed” after shredder. Is there a cure for me? If I could beat it once it would be a cure and I would never play it again, only humans!! Another thing, if you play a good move against shredder it shuts down for hours thinking, this is a little unfair!
Andrew! Don’t be depressed. The code in the little chips in the shredder server does not think like you, does not care about you and like the cartoon which has Kasparov pulling the mains lead out of Deep Blue (“one way to beat Deep Blue”), has no memory of you after you go…. So use shredder for training, even better get the full program, train your mind and get back to where it’s at.. playing humans again! We are all falible, but this makes life much more interesting than us all being machines, chess is for all. My best time in chess is playing my nephew with big wooden pieces on a Sunday afternoon…(!)
At “easy” level the machine missed 1 move mate threat and lost.
shredder at level hard is really good.Certainly, one can learn with a program because the engine would never miss a tactics or combination.
Really I enjoy that!
But, will someone tell me how the system or shredder evaluates a position? Or there any separate evaluation programs there for download?

Hi Susan Polgar,
My mouse turns so affectionate with this chess engine, because of which it fails and turns sticky to move – lol – Anyway its nice warm up match with this chess engine – as usual Shredder(Hard) beats me Blue & Black – lol
But I will make Shredder [Chess Engine] as my friend by defeating it – lol .
Okay Okay – Guys keep cool – I know you guys are very passionate with this chess engine, aren’t you all guys ?
As my mouse is so sticky – my mood shifts to Hot web site – so guys catch you later.
Believe me guys,Humans are far much brighter than machine – I will win the chess engine,if not today some other day – lol
Bye Bye Guys

Hi Susan Polgar,
Let me keep my chess play warm by playing with the cute “Shredder” Hard [ The chess engine ] – May be it may do the same as it did to me in earlier games with it – beating me black and blue – lol . But a day will dawn, where I will add this chess engine in my win list – okay okay guys cool.
Let me play the warm up game.
By
Venky[ India – Chennai ]
Hi Susan Polgar,
Well,Whenever I play warm up game with “Shredder” the chess engine – my intention is not to,either thoughtful or tactful, the intention is to maneuver the chess pieces with speed and analysis the response of the machine.
So that will continue in all warm up match – lol

Very tough to play with shredder in hard mode. We can not understand how shredder put its pieces in right direction.
Very tough to beat shredder in hard mode. We can not understand how shredder put its pieces in right direction.
I have Shredder, Fritz and Chessmaster. When set to a strength of 1600, I can beat Shredder 60%, draw 20% and lose 20%. I keep track and also find I lose when I move too quickly. This happens due to Shredder moving instantly. So I tend to move instantly….not good!
I have Shredder and lose to it about 20% of the time when it is set to 1600. Losses are due to moving too fast. I do this because Shredder move instantly which make me move too quickly. Otherwise I can beat it 90% of the time.
Hi Susan Polgar,
In hard level,good fun.
Humans are much superior that chess engines.
This chess engine,is feared about about my moves in hard level – lol.
I know you guys won’t accept it,but I believe my friend “Susan” ( This blog owner) accepts it – Am I correct, Susan ? Yes am I ,thats pretty nice – lol.
Okay Okay – Cool. – Nice fun with this chess engine.

Hi Susan polgar,
Well, this day – this chess engine(In hard level)took too much of time to think, poor machine : lol.
Wait wait wait – hastily don’t draw conclusion that this chess engine not one of the best,it is.
But no chess engine can match the human intelligence.
Cool, Cool – Its just my opinion.
so I just began to surf another pages of this site/blog,left the machine to think for ever – lol

Hi Susan Polgar,
I had good time with this chess engine, this day – it was so active but in the last game,it has gone to frozen state of mind – lol and began to think more than usual, which means its matrix vector began worrying – lol.
Okay okay – cool.
Not a single game – I had taken time to respond : Which means I am not inclined plunge deep,to device a strategy to win this chess engine – lol.
Okay okay – nobody is going to believe this but the fact remains so – But I know “Susan” will believe my words – wouldn’t my friend “Susan” ? Yes you would, thats like a good friend – okay okay :cool.
Conclusively,Human intelligence is way far weighed,in calculating complex things than just a machine.

I beat every level quite easily… Oh yes, I almost forgot I am a Grandmaster!
This is how i beat hard shredder. Biggest mistake made by hard shredder at 24th move.

Cool utility!
The easy level is useful for beginners.
But it would be fine if it could be possible to have the list of the moves played.
When I was trying the medium level, suddenly Shredder got stuck thinking in this position: White (I) = Kg1, Qa1, Ra2, Be6, Pc5-d4-f2-g3-h2; Black (Shredder, to move) = Kh8, Qg5, Ra4, Bc6, Pb5-f5-g7-h7.
:-O
won against all the 3 levels… but the hard level was really good…
thanks & regards…

The engine sometimes freezes your knight when trying to move it and won’t let you move it to the 7th and 8th ranks
No chess board shows anywhere. How are we supposed to play it?
This is not great at all. I used to be an avid player and enjoyed chess online a lot . Online chess sites like shredder really demoralized me and now I no longer can bear the thought of playing chess at all! Seriously, it was a complete killjoy, I have acknowledged my failure in this game and can play no more. I wish chess players good luck but it is not for me.. But it is not a good idea to play computers, especially those on the fun levels!
