Well, Fischer is not really playing. However, Garry Kasparov will be playing in his first chess tournament since his retirement after the 2005 Linares super tournament. My sister will be playing in her first chess tournament since the birth of Hanna. They will be joined by the legendary 7-time World Champion Anatoly Karpov and Victor “Forever Young” Korchnoi in Zurich on August 22nd, 2006 in a rapid chess event – a Fischer Random rapid chess event!
Here is the official website.

Good luck to Judit!
Susan,
See my comment on adding excitement to the game.
I think it is a reasonable idea. I added it a few minutes ago.
I like Classical Time Control. But the cost to organize a Classical Time Control event is 3-4-5 times more than a rapid event.
– The players’ fees are higher because it’s harder to secure the players
– The cost for space, TD and other misc. expenses are higher
That is one of the many reasons why many organizers are starting to do more rapid events.
Best wishes,

plus : You wouldn’t get Gary to play classical chess right now.
Is this supposed to be Fischerandom Chess?
Yes it is. Maybe Fischer can be alternate. (lol)
Actually, previous post may be unto something. Imagine getting this crew of chess players playing Fischer Random Chess with Bobby Fischer himself playing! This event then would get daily world wide coverage. Face it, for some reason we all probably know, Fischer is the only Chess Player to get this kind of World Wide coverage.
I kind of enjoy the faster games if I can watch them live on the internet.
to watch an entire slow game can take what seems like all day sometimes.
I tried fischer random and found it very challenging. I only played a few games and am still not sure on some rules like the castle.
if Fischer was playing here with Karpov and Kasparov this would hit front page headlines.
Bobby Fischer has said that now he’ll only play Fischerandom chess and not the “old chess”. I believe he has played Fischerandom with Susan. Anyway, if Bobby Fischer backed up his statement by playing in a Fischerandom chess event, the publicity would be incredible. I would not bet on his participation though.
well Fischer can still be arrested by Americans if he leaves Iceland. that is my understanding. Japan allowed him to go to Iceland. he can not be extradited out of Iceland. but if he sets foot on another country he can be arrested and extradited back to USA.
well maybe Japan would send him back to Iceland again. but I dont know if they would let him back into Japan.
Fischer still lives in a tough situation. freedom in Iceland only. not total freedom.
