The New Iberia Optimist Club is making it possible for young chess enthusiasts to put their knowledge of the game on the line in the club’s first scholastic chess tournament.

Edwin Whipp, Optimist Club member and tournament chair, said the tournament is scheduled Jan. 31 at New Iberia Senior High School. Players will be placed four divisions. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. with the first of five rounds to begin at 9 a.m.

Lunch is scheduled between noon and 1 p.m. with the Optimist Club cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for purchase.

“Chess is great for children to develop their critical thinking skills,” Whipp said. “It has been proven that a chess player takes tests quicker and better, and their math skills are enhanced with playing chess. And, besides, it is fun to play.

There is a $10 fee to participate in the competition. A portion of that registration goes for dues in the Louisiana Chess Association. Pre-registration received prior to Wednesday is $7.

Registration should be mailed to NISH Chess Tournament, in care of Austin Whipp, P. O. Box 9794, New Iberia, La., 70652.
