“The Women’s World Chess Championship opens the chain of events in August 28 in Nalchik, Russia. The event brings together the qualified players in a KO system, leading directly to the world champion title match at the end of the tournament. Unfortunately, some qualified players decided not to participate in the championship because of the uncertainties created by the South Ossetia conflict between Russia and Georgia.

FIDE President Ilyumzhinov recently negotiated the conditions with the organizers and thus FIDE hopes that the effects of the military actions will not directly disturb the championship, it will be held in a peaceful and safe manner. Its significance is great as this is the highest level of competition for women chess players of the world and it can crown the new Queen of the chess world.”
